Blood Sugar Blood Work Flashcards
What is the significance of glucose
Blood glucose levels indicate the amount of sugar in
the blood. It serves as the primary energy source for cells and is tightly regulated to
maintain optimal function.
What is low value of glucose
Hypoglycemia, can indicate an
imbalance in blood sugar regulation often due to conditions like insulin
overproduction, certain medications, prolonged fasting, or endocrine disorders,
leading to symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, weakness, and, if severe, loss of consciousness.
What is high glucose
Hyperglycemia, which may result from uncontrolled diabetes, insulin resistance, stress, certain medications, or
endocrine disorders, and can lead to complications such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, and kidney problems if not properly managed.
What is insulin, fasting
Insulin regulates blood sugar by facilitating the uptake of glucose into cells. Imbalances may indicate insulin resistance or diabetes.
What is low fasting isulin
Low fasting insulin levels may indicate reduced insulin
production, often associated with conditions like type 1 diabetes, or increased insulin sensitivity, which can occur in response to certain dietary patterns, weight loss, or regular physical activity.
What is high fasting insulin
High fasting insulin levels indicate insulin resistance, a condition where the body’s cells do not respond effectively to insulin, which is often associated with conditions like pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
What is Hemoglobin A1c
Hemoglobin A1c provides an average of blood sugar levels over several months, offering insights into long-term glucose control and diabetes risk.
What is low Hemoglobin A1c
May suggest hypoglycemia, an
insulinoma (a benign tumor of the pancreas that secretes too much insulin),
or conditions that shorten red blood cell lifespan, such as hemolytic anemia,
recent blood loss, or certain hemoglobinopathies, indicating lower average blood glucose levels over the past two to three months.
What is high Hemoglobin A1c
A high hemoglobin A1c level indicates poor long-term blood
sugar control, often reflecting chronic hyperglycemia and suggesting a higher risk of diabetes complications or the presence of diabetes.
