BIOPSY Flashcards
Exfoliative Cytology
pap’s smear; desquamated cells
excisional biopsy
complete removal of tissue lesions
most reliable biopsy; allows examination the whole tumor lesion
excisional biopsy
partial removal of tissue lesion; preferred for large tumors that cannot be excised completely
incisional biopsy
fluid aspiration of cells; simple, inexpensive, no need for hospitalization; least invasive (Ex. FNAB, BM aspiration)
needle biopsy
incisional biopsy
bite biopsy
small pieces of tumor tissue are removed by special forceps (ex. endoscopic biopsy)
bite biopsy
obtaining a deeper skin sample that removes a short cylinder or “apple core” of tissue; full thickness skin specimen
punch biopsy
this type of biopsy involves removing the top layers of skin by shaving it off; performed with a local anesthetic
shave biopsy
incision biopsy from solid organs; wedge shaped
wedge biopsy
