Q

What happens during G1?

A

It’s a period of activity in which cells do most of their growing. During this phase, cells increase in size and synthesize new proteins and organelles

Q

What happens during S phase?

A

Chromosomes are replicated and the synthesis of DNA molecules takes place. Key proteins associated with the chromosomes are also synthesized during the S phase. Once a cell enters the S phase and begins the replication of its chromosomes, it has reached the point of no return.

Q

What happens during G2 phase?

A

Many of the organelles and molecules required for cell division are produced. When the events of the G2 phase are completed, the cell is ready to enter mitosis.

Q

What happens during prophase?

A

The chromatin condensed into the chromosomes. The centrioles separate, and a spindle begins to form. The nuclear envelopes begin to break down.

Q

What phase takes up to 50%-60% of the total time required to complete mitosis?

Q

What happens during metaphase?

A

The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. Each chromosome is connected to a spindle fiber at its centromere

15
Q

What are centrioles?

A

Centrioles are two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm near the nuclear envelope, separate and take up positions on opposite sides of the nucleus.

16
Q

Where are the centrioles?

A

In the centrosome region

17
Q

What does the centrosome do?

A

It helps organize the spindle

18
Q

What is the spindle?

A

A fanlike microtubule structure that helps separate the chromosomes

19
Q

What are the stages of mitosis?

A

Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, as telophase

20
Q

What happens during telophase?

A

The chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell and lose their distinct shapes. Two nuclear envelopes form.

21
Q

During which stage does the nuclear envelope form?

A

Telophase

22
Q

During which stage do the chromosomes gather at opposite sides of the cell and lose their distinct shapes?

A

Telophase
