Biology Final- Meiosis Flashcards
What are the stages of meiosis?
Interphase, Prophase x2, Metaphase x2, Anaphase x2, Telophase and cytokinesis x2
How many chromatids are there in a tetrad?
4
What happens in Interphase 1?
Cells undergo a round of DNA replication, forming duplicate chromosomes
What happens during Prophase 1?
Each chromosome pairs with its corresponding homologous chromosome to form a tetrad
When does crossing over happen?
During meiosis 1
*
What happens during Metaphase 1?
Spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes
What happens during Anaphase 1?
The fibers pull the homologous chromosomes toward opposite end so of the cell
What happens during Telophase 1 and Cytokinesis (1)?
Nuclear membranes form. The cell separates into two cells.
What happens during Prophase 2?
Mitosis one results in two haploid (N) daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the original cell.
What happens during Metaphase 2?
The chromosomes line up in a similar way to the metaphase stage of mitosis
What happens during Anaphase 2?
The sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite ends of the cell
What happens during Telophase 2 and Cytokinesis 2?
Meiosis 2 results in 4 haploid (N) daughter cells
What are diploid cells?
Have half of the chromosomes of their parent cell, sex cells
