better anatomy one Flashcards
what are the anterior and posterior openings of the oral cavity
the oral fissure anteriorly and the posterior oropharyngeal isthmus
where is the vestibule
between the buccal mucosa and the teeth
where is the oral cavity proper
from the alveolar arches to the oropharnyngeal isthmus
on the anterior surface of the hard palate what do we have and what do they do
these are the palatine rugae. they are roughend mucosa that function to help food in place while masticating
what are the muscles of the soft palate
tensor palati, levator palati, palatoglossus, palatophayngeus, muscularis uvulae
what are the attachments of the levator palati and the tensor palati
LP: this elevates the soft palate
TP: tenses the palate attaches to the auditory tubes and the soft palate
what are the attachments of the palatoglossus and the palatopharyngeus and whats special about these
palatoglossus comes from the toungue to the soft palate
the palatopharyngeus attachs to the soft palate from the pharynx.
these two form the oropharyngeal isthmus and have the palatine tonsils between them
these form the arches
whats the muscularis uvulae and whats it do
it attaches soft palate to the uvula and it elevates the uvula
what attaches the tongue to the floor of the oral cavity
the frenulum
what muscles form the floor of the oral cavity
the mylohyoid and the geniohyoid
what are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue and their actions
genioglossus - protrusion of the tongue
styloglossus - retraction of the tongue
palatoglossus - elevation of the tongue
hyoglossus is depression of the tongue
what are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue and their function
superior longitudinal - curl upwrds
vertical - flatten
transverse - narrow
inferior longitudinal - curls downwards
whats the parotid gland secrete and where is it
it does serous secretions. and it opens next to the second upper molar in the vestibule
what are the two parts of the tongue what divides them
anteriorly it is the oral part - 2/3 of it
posteriorly it is the pharyngeal part 1/3
the terminal sulcus divides these two
what muscles does the parotid duct associate with
the parotid gland sits behind the masseter muscle and the partotid duct runs over this. then the duct pierces the buccinator muscle and goes to the second molar vestible space
wheres the submandibular gland and what does it secrete
it forms around the mylohyoid muscle like a horseshoe shape. from the deep portion of the gland the duct goes anteriorly. mixed secretions
where do we find the sublingual gland and what does that secrete
it is deep to the tongue doing mucus secretions into the oral cavity proper via many ducts.
