anatomy 1 Flashcards
what is the opening of the mouth called
the oral fissure
what is the vestibule
the space from our teeth to our buccal membrane
what is the oral cavity proper
the inside of the teeth and the rest of our mouth
what opens into the vestibule
the parotid duct opens into the vestibule at the second upper molar
what two muscles will hold the food in place as we chew
the buccinator muscle and the tongue
what are the gingivae
these are the gums, we have the lingual gingivae on the oral cavity side. the vestibular gingivae are the ones in the vestibule.
what is the exit from the oral cavity called
this is the oropharyngeal isthmus. remember that it is formed by the palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches with the palatine tonsils in between
what bones make the hard palate
the maxilla, the palatine bone and the posterior nasal spines of the sphenoid bones
what are the rugae in the oral cavity
these are like folds on the front of the hard palate, the palatine rugae function to hold food in place while we process it and chew it.
what are the four plus one muscles of the soft palate
the tensor palati, levator palati, palatopharyngeus and palatoglossus + muscularis uvulae.
whats the attachment of the tensor palati
this muscle provides tension to the soft palate. attachs to palate and the auditory tubes - this is the muscle that allows us to unblock our ears when we swallow on airplanes
where do the palatoglossus and the palatopharyngeus attach
palatoglossus from the tongue to the palate
palatopharyngeus is the palate to the pharynx
what are the names of the tongue papillae
the vallate papillae, fungiform papillae, filiform papillae,
foliate papillae
where on the tongue do we most likely find each papillae type
vallate papillae are at the crest at the back of the anterior part of the tongue,
lateral aspects of the main part of the tongue are the fungiform papillae
filiform papillae are in the middle aspects near the septum
right on the lateral edges of the tongue are the foliate papillae
what divides the anterior part of the tongue from the posterior
the terminal sulcus
what are our intrinsic muscles of the tongue
these have no bony attachment,
there is the superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, transverse muscle and the vertical muscle
what are the muscles of the floor of the oral cavity and where do they attach
mylohyoid, attaches to the mandible and to the hyoid.
geniohyoid attaches to the middle of the mandible and to the hyoid. these muscles can move the hyoid bone
what are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue
palatoglossus, genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus
what are the attachments of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue
palatoglossus - from the tongue to the soft palate
genioglossus - this sits on top of the geniohyoid muscle, this one comes from the midline of the mandible to the tongue
hyoglossus - from the hyoid being either side of the genioglossus to the lateral tongue
styloglossus is the lateral aspects of the tongue to the styloid process at the base of the skull
where do the parotid glands sit and where do they empty to
empty to the vestibule at the upper second molar space.
these glands lie external to the masseter muscle, with the duct running overtop of this muscle and piercing the buccinator at the end of the second molar
submandibular gland
forms around the mylohyoid muscle end like a horseshoe, this gland has a superior and deep portion. the duct comes from the deep portion.
where are the sublingual glands and where do they empty to
these are deep to the tongue and they have many small ducts that just empty into the oral cavity proper.
