Q

what is the test for starch?

A

Iodine. If the sample changes colour from browny-orange to blue-black, starch is present, if the sample stays browny-orange, there’s no starch

Q

what is the test for reducing sugars?

A

Benedict’s Solution. Add benedict’s solution (blue) to a sample and heat it in a water bath (75C), higher the concentration of reducing sugar, the further the colour change goes.
colour changes:
blue (none) –> green (traceable) –> yellow (low) –> orange (moderate) –> brick red (high)

Q

what is the test for proteins?

A

Biuret test. If there’s no protein, the solution will stay blue, if there is protein, solution will turn purple.

Q

what is the test for fats and oils?

A

Ethanol Emulsion Test. Shake test substance with ethanol and pour the solution into water, if there is a layer of milky emulsion on top of the water, there is fat/oil present. If there’s no fat/oil, the test substance will stay colourless.

16
Q

why are carbohydrates needed?

A

energy release (respiration), it’s temporarily stored in the liver, excess is stored in liver and muscles as glycogen, then stored as fat

17
Q

why are fats needed?

A

insulation, long term energy storage, waterproofing (leaves), cell membrane structure, organ protection, sex hormone production, excess is what causes obesity

18
Q

why are proteins needed?

A

growth, tissue repair, making enzymes, emergency energy

19
Q

what are 5 food sources for carbohydrates?

A

sugar
honey
rice
potato
bananas

20
Q

what are 5 food sources for fats (lipids)?

A

oil
butter
red meat
cheese
egg yolks

21
Q

what are 5 food sources for proteins?

A

meat
fish
beans
egg (whites)
nuts

22
Q

how many different types of amino acids are there?

A

20

23
Q

what energy is in the bonds of glucose?

A

chemical energy

24
Q

where is water found?

A

in the cytoplasm of the cells and blood (90%)
