B3 - Respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to release energy.
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
What is the balanced symbol equation for respiration?
c6h12o6 + 6o2 = 6co2 + 6h20 + energy
What is the formula for RQ?
RQ = carbon dioxide produced/oxygen used
Where is energy stored?
ATP molecules.
What is metabolic rate?
Metabolic rate is the amount of energy your body needs.
Which waste gas do you need to breathe out?
Carbon dioxide.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is the release of energy without the use of oxygen and produces lactic acid as waste.
What happens after a sprint?
- heart continues to beat faster than normal so blood can carry lactic acid away from muscles to be broken down
- breathing remains heavy for a few minutes to obtain extra oxygen
- panting to replace oxygen
What is oxygen debt?
A temporary oxygen shortage in the body tissues arising from exercise.
