B2 - Natural selection Flashcards
What is evolution?
The basic idea behind the theory of evolution is that all the different species have developed over time from simple life forms.
What happens to species that cannot change over time?
They become extinct.
What is natural selection?
Process where good characteristics survive conditions and can be passed on so the population becomes better suited to the environment.
What is the theory of natural selection?
1) within any species there is variation
2) organisms produce more young than will survive
3) there will be competition for these resources
4) only the best will survive (survival of the fittest)
5) those that survive pass on their adaptation
Which part of the cell controls adaptations?
The genes.
Why did some disagree with Darwin’s theory?
- some people thought there wasn’t enough evidence
- it contradicted the Bible
- some objected to the idea humans evolved from apes
A new species is more likely to evolve on an island than a mainland. Explain why.
This is because they are geographically isolated so there is no interference.
Give two reasons why a penguin that swims faster has a better chance of surviving.
- they can catch more fish
- they can get away from predators
