B2 - Population and pollution Flashcards
What are the issues with waste?
- household rubbish is piling up in landfill sites
- sewage can end up in rivers and oceans, killing fish
- burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide
What is the ozone layer?
The ozone layer is a layer in the earth’s atmosphere that blocks out UV.
How has the use of CFC’s led to an increase in cancer?
CFC’s have led to a depletion of the ozone therefore less UV is being blocked which causes cancer.
Which gas causes acid rain?
Sulfur dioxide.
What is exponential growth?
Growth whose rate becomes ever more rapid in proportion to the growing total number or size.
Why is population increasing?
The birth rate is higher than the death rate.
What is carbon footprint?
A ‘carbon footprint’ measures the total greenhouse gas given off by a person or organization.
What is an indicator species?
Organisms used to measure the level of pollution in the water or air.
Why is it unusual to find lichen in the city?
This is because it cannot survive in polluted areas and would be killed in cities.
