B3 - Molecules of life Flashcards
What is DNA?
DNA is the complex chemical that carries genetic information. DNA is contained in chromosomes, which are found in the nucleus of most cells.
What is chromosomes?
Chromosomes are X-shaped objects found in the nucleus of most cells. They carry genetic information.
What is a gene?
A gene is a section of a chromosome.
What is mitochondria?
Where respiration takes place inside a cell.
What are chemical bases?
The double helix cross links.
Which molecule in the cell is a code for making proteins?
DNA.
What is the base code?
The base code is the order of bases found in DNA.
What are the stages of protein synthesis?
1) DNA is copied
2) the copied code is called mRNA
3) the mRNA leaves the nucleus and travels to the ribosomes
4) the ribosomes put the amino acids together in the right order (translation)
