one of the world’s oldest healing systems. originated in India and is thought to be as much as 5,000 yeats old. this translates from Sanskrit as “science of life or longevity”
ayurveda
one of the three subtle energies that determine metabolism and intelligence of the body-mind system. the 3 _ are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. this literally means “impurity” or “that which can become unbalanced.” these are also knwon as three universal natures
doshas
clarified butter used for massage or for cooking
ghee
foot massage using a small bowl made from three metals
kansa vataki
the dosha that gives structure to the body, lubricates tissues, provides strength, and supports immune function; this dosha has qualities that are like earth and water
kapha dosha
one or more syllables sung or chanted to help bring balance to the body-mind system; commonly knoen and used _ is om, pronounced aum
mantra
sensitive points on the body where there are greater concentrations of the body’s life force. there are 108 _ points used therapeutically but thousands of minor marmani; literally means “vital energy point”
marma
the plural of marma in sanskrit

the five great elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth
pachamahabhutas
the dosha that is responsible for all metabolic functions and transformations; this dosha has qualities that are like fire and water
pitta dosha
individual or natal constitution; literally means one’s “nature”
prakruti
the language in which the root texts of ayurveda were written
sanskrit
a treatment in which a fine, warm stream of oil or a cool stream of buttermilk is poured over the forehead to deeply calm the nervous system. this causes the release of serotonin, which deeply relaxes the body, melting tensions; it alleviates discomfort in the head, neck, and shoulder area, as well as engenders profound feelings of pleasure, inner balance, mental clarity, and radiance to the completion
shirodhara
a blend of flour and powdered hebs used dry or as a paste to remove excess oil after massage treatment
