Attention Flashcards
Attention
Process by which select and focus attention on stim. Specific stim are selected for enhanced processing
Cocktail party effect
Figure/ground perception. Selective enhancement of attention in order to filter out distracters such as listening to one person at a noisy party
Dichotic listening
Simultaneous presentation of different stim to right and left ears. Shadowing- focusing on only one stim from one ear. (Divided attention task)
Attentional spotlight
The shifting of our limited selective attention around the environment to highlight stim for enhanced processing. Can’t pay attention to more than one thing at once.
Early selection model
A model of attention in which the attentional bottleneck filters out stim before preliminary perceptual analysis has occurred. Gorilla playing basketball example.
Attentional bottleneck
A filter that results from the limits intrinsic to our attentional processes, with the result that only the most important stim are selected for special processing.
Late selection model
A model of attention in which the attentional bottleneck filters out stim only after substantial analysis has occurred. Ex switch attention when someone calls your name at a party.
The Stroop effect
Measures ability to switch attention. Colors in different color.
P300 waves
Indicates attention. Alcoholics have reduced P300.
Method to find brain regions involved
EEG (measure instantaneous changes) and fMRI (measure activity). Ex, vision in V1 lights up (superior colliculus), LGN.
Parahippocampal gyrus
Processes spatial info of vision, houses.
Fusiform gyrus
Processes faces.
Superior colliculus
Directs eye movements.
Pulvinar
Posterior portion of thalamus, important for shifting attention.
Parietal areas
Intraparietal sulcus. Critical for voluntary (overt) attention, directs attention, planning eye movements.
