AQA booklet Flashcards
nucleus
contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
cytoplasm
gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen.
- it contains enzymes that controls these chemical reactions
cell membrane
holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
mitochondria
these are where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration takes place
- respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work
ribosomes
these are where proteins are made in the cell
bacteria cell wall
- not made from cellulose
- made from peptidoglycan
fungal cell wall
- not made from cellulose
- made from chitin
cell wall
supports the cell and strengthens it
plant cell wall
made from cellulose
vacuole - plant
- the vacuole stores cell sap, which is weak solution of water, sugars, salts, and other substances.
- The water in the cell sap helps create pressure (turgor) for rigidity.
chloroplast
- where photosynthesis occurs
- photosynthesis makes food for the plants
- they contain a green substance called chlorophyll
chlorophyll
a green substance which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
plasmids
plasmids can carry extra genes, such as those for antibiotic resistance or metabolic functions. These genes can be transferred between bacteria, which is important in genetic engineering and bacterial adaptation.
