Q

Give 6 arguments for Appeasement.

A
  • Nobody wanted the horrors of WW1 to be repeated.
  • Many people believed that the Treaty of Versailles had been too harsh on Germany.
  • If Germany grew stronger, they acted as a buffer between Europe and Communism. Communism was a big threat at the time.
  • Britain was not ready for war. By 1938, the German armed forces were very strong.
  • Britain was preoccupied by the results of the Depression (high level of unemployment).
  • Spanish Civil War results proved how ruthless and powerful Germany’s forces were. Guernica was mercilessly bombed by Germany and this showed the world how strong Germany was.

Q

Give 5 arguments against Appeasement.

A
  • It gave Hitler the advantage, he grew cockier with every success.
  • It wasn’t morally right to allow Germany to invade innocent countries, it was cowardly.
  • Chamberlain misjudged Hitler, he thought Hitler was a normal leader.
  • There were plenty of opportunities to stop Hitler (Rhineland) that were missed because of Appeasement.
  • Appeasement failed to prevent WW2, it was a #EpicFail.
