Antibiotics: Penicillin Flashcards
MOA of Penicillin
Interferes with the last step of bacterial cell wall synthesis (Peptidoglycan crosslinking)
Poorly absorbed from the instestinal tract, oral doses must be very large, not effective orally
Penicillin G
Acid Stable Penicillin
Penicillin V
Phenoxymethyl penicillin
narrow spectrum penicillin
Penicillinase-resistant/ antistaphylococcal penicillins
a prototype drog, off the market due to high incidence of intersitial nephritis
Methicilin
2,6 dimethoxyphenylpenicillin
complication of methicllin
interstitial nephritis
Why is Penicillin not effective against gram negative organisms
since gram (-) cell wall has thin peptidoglycan layer
Most comon adverse effect of Penicillin
Allergy
Penicillin that can be given to patients with renal problem
Nafcillin
Think: NF- no froblem
best absorbed isoxazolyl penicillin
dicloxacillin
Penicillin with antibacterial spectrum similar to that of pen G but are more effective against gram negative bacilli
Aminopenicillins
Aminopenicillin more frequently administered parenterally, poor GI absorption
Ampicillin
Aminopenicillin better GI absorption than Ampicillin
Amoxicillin
Prodrugs of ampicillin
Bacampicillin, Hetacillin, Cyclicillin
camp ta cycle
If patient is allergic to penicilin we may give what?
Erythromycin
