Anti-parkinson's Flashcards
Levodopa
CLASSIFICATION =
Antiparkinsons
USE =
Parkinsons disease
MODE OF ACTION :
Crosses the blood brain barrier and is converted into dopamine
ADVERSE =
Dose dependent - nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea , hypertension , anxiety , aggression, paranoia.
Sinemet (levodopa + carbidopa)
CLASSIFICATION =
Antiparkinsons
USE =
Parkinsons disease
MODE OF ACTION :
Carbidopa (an enzyme inhibitor) slows down peripheral metabolism to allow more levodopa to cross the blood brain barrier and convert to dopamine.
ADVERSE =
Dose dependent - nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea , hypertension , anxiety , aggression, paranoia.
Entacapone ,
Tolcapone
CLASSIFICATION =
Antiparkinsons
USE =
Parkinsons disease
MODE OF ACTION :
Inhibits the COMT synaptic enzyme which metabolises neurotransmitters. Used with combination therapy (As does not cross the blood brain barrier).
ADVERSE =
Dose dependent - nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea , hypertension , anxiety , aggression, paranoia.
Benzotopine
CLASSIFICATION =
Antiparkinsons
USE =
Parkinsons disease
MODE OF ACTION :
Blocks cholinergic receptors to stop acetylcholine (neurotransmitter) from binding
ADVERSE =
Dry mouth , blurred vision , constipation
