Benzodiazapines MoA
GABAa agonist
Increase Cl conductance –> hyperpolarisation
Benzodiazapines examples
Diazepam, Midazolam
Benzodiazapines warnings
Addiction
Airway issues
CVS collapse
Anti-epileptic drug general MoA
Na channel blocker
Phenytoin use
Status epilepticus or generalized seizures
Sodium valproate MoA
GABAa effects and Na blocker
Sodium valproate ADR and risk
Congenital malformations
Lamotrigine MoA
Na and Ca channel blocker
Lamotrigine use
Focal epilpsy
when sodium valproate is contra-indicated
Levetiracetam (Keppra) MoA
Synpatic vesicle glycoprotein binder
stops release of neurotransmiters into synpase
reduces neuronal activity
Levetiracetam Use
focal seizures
generalized seizures
safe in pregnancy
