Ankle and Lower Leg Flashcards
What’s the issue with taping?
Only a temporary fix and doesn’t last on the body
can lead to atrophy if dependent on tape
What is neuromuscular control training?
training on uneven surfaces or balance boards
balance training is key in determining whether they are ready to return to play
What are some functional tests?
Walk on toes (planta flexion)
Walk on heels (dorsiflexion)
Hops on injured ankle, Start and stop running, change direction rapidly, run figure eights
What are some recognitions of ankle injuries?
ankle sprains are the single most common injury in athletics
inversion sprains are most common and injury to the lateral ligaments
What ligaments are injured during inversion sprain?
Calcaneofibular ligaments and anterior talofibular ligament spain
What happens during Everson ankle sprains?
ligament complex is tighter
partial tear of deltoid ligament
What is a Syndesmotic Spain? (High Ankle sprain)
Sprain of anterior tibiofibular ligament
torn with increased external rotation or dorsiflexion
How to care for ankle sprain?
horseshoe foam pad for compression
wet compression of ice or cold water, apply ice for 20 minutes repetitions
elevation and avoid weight bearing
limited range of motion ( do range of motion for eversion and inversion) for first couple days ( if high ankle sprain)
How to care for ankle fractures/dislocations?
splint and go for x-ray
RICE, immobilization for 6-8 weeks
What to consider for partial tears?
A partial tear is basically a tear. Needs to be treated as full tear to avoid further injury
Where can tendinosis take place?
Achilles, Peroneal, Anterior, Posterior
What are Tibular and Fibular Fractures? How to deal?
splint, ice, medical referral, restricted weight bearing
What are Tibular and Fibular Fractures? How to deal?
splint, ice, medical referral, restricted weight bearing
What are Stress Fractures of the Tibia and Fibula? What are the causes?
pain in and around shin, tenderness and sharp pain
It’s an overuse injury related to overtraining, poor biomechanics, or training surfaces
How to care for stress fractures?
rest, ice, gradual return, 2 weeks of pain free before return to activity
