Cranial & superior
A structure being closer to the top of the head than another structure in the head, neck or torso (exc. limbs)
Anterior
A structure being more in front than another structure in the body
Posterior / Dorsal
A structure being more at the back than another structure of the body
Medial
A structure that is closer to the median plane/ midline of the body than another structure in the body
Lateral
A structure that is farther/away from the median plane / midline of the body than another structure
Proximal (only used for limbs)
A structure closer to the median plane or root of the limb
Distal (only used for limbs)
A structure being farther away from the median plane or root of the limb
Caudal / Inferior
A structure being closer to the feet or the lower part of the body
Superficial / external
A structure that is closer to the surface of the body
Deep / internal
A structure that is farther away from the surface
Ipsilateral
On the same side
Contralateral
On the opposite side
