Anaemia - 231 Flashcards
What are the Hb levels that classify men and women anaemic?
Men
Where is erythropoietin synthesised? In response to what?
Kidney (peritubular cells).
Response to tissue hypoxia (O2 tension within cells of kidney)
What does EPO do? (Basic)
Stimulate cells within the bone marrow to differentiate into erythroid precursors
Why do patients with chronic renal disease become anaemic?
It will reduce/stop the production of epo, resulting in reduced red cell production
What is the morphology of anaemia due to epo deficiency?
Normocytic
Describe the mechanism behind anaemia of chronic disease
Interaction of inflammatory cytokines interferes with the red cell life cycle by impairing iron metabolism and inhibiting red cell precursors. Causes normocytic anaemia
Where is iron absorbed?
Duodenum
Where is B12 absorbed?
Terminal ileum
What can G6PD deficiency result in?
Haemolyic anaemia.
X-linked
What kind of anaemia does a patient with thalassaemia have?
Hypochromic microcytic
What 3 things can you measure in the blood that might indicate haemolysis?
LDH
Reticulocyte count
Bilirubin
