amoxicillin Flashcards
1
Q
what type of medication is amoxicillin?
A
pencillin
2
Q
what is its mechanism?
A
inhibits transpeptidase thus preventing cross-linking in peptiglycan causing a weakened cell wall and allowing water to enter due to the impaired osmotic gradient. this results in cell death and cell lysis.
3
Q
what is it used for?
A
anthrax dental abscesses and infection h.pylori - eradication therapy chest infection - bacterial, pneumonia abdominal sepsis hosp acquired infections endocarditis
4
Q
side effects
A
nausea, non-specific rash, diarrhoea
allergy - rash
anaphylaxis - severe reaction!
5
Q
caution
A
those with allergy
elderly
high risk for c.difficle
renal impairment
6
Q
drug interactions
A
reduce clearance of methotrexate - thus may lead to toxicity
enhance warfarin effect- kill normal glut flora and prevent vit K synthesis
7
Q
why in renal iimpairment?
A
increased risk of crystalluria
