AGK Engines - Gas Turbines Designs Flashcards

1
Q

Single Spool axial flow Turbojet characteristics

A

Only efficient for high speed flight

Small frontal area produces low drag, ideal for high speed flight

Not used In commercial aviation - inefficient and noisy

Q

Turboprop/Turbo-shaft engines characteristics

A

Centrifugal compressors used to reduce length

Most of the engird is extracted to produce Torque

Contribution of torque shaft hp and residual thrust can be measured in equivalent shaft horse power (ESHP)

Q

What is a Free Turbine?

A

Prop driven by LP turbine allowing greater flexibility to operate HP spool

No mechanical link between gas generator and prop turbine

Each element - free to rotate at optimum speed (helps relieve load on engine during start)
