Iron deficiency anemia unique cause
Pica
Pernicious anemia
Anemia with the impaired uptake of Vitamin B12
Treatment of Pernicious anemia
Increase B12, BUT PO WILL NOT HELP. Must be parenteral or inhaled
PRBC use/lab
Increase RBCs and H&H. Lab: H&H
FFP and platelets use/lab
Stop bleeding. Lab: Platelets
Albumin use
Hypertonic fluid used for Hypervolemia (moves fluids into the vascular system) and Hypervolemic shock.
Things to do before blood transfusion
Consent signs, Type and screen (blood type), Type and crossmatch (can patient accept blood) labs, Patent >20G IV
Tubing for blood products
Y tubing. One branch for normal saline solution ONLY and the other for the blood product.
Double verification for blood products
Name/DOB Medical record/blood bank number Blood type/RH Unit# Signed consent Expiration date MD order
Transfusion process
Start blood ASAP or send back to lab. Cannot administer if it has been more than 30 minutes and must be with the patient for 15 minutes and take BP after 15 mins then every hour. Typically given 2-3 hours and no more than 4
