Adult Health - Module 4 Flashcards
Delta endocrine cells
Secrete growth hormone
Beta endocrine cells
Secrete insulin
Insulin
Released
Targets
Facilitates transport
Use
Released - b/c Increased blood glucose, GI hormones, and amino acids
Targets - Muscle, adipose tissue, liver
Facilitates transport - of Glucose, amino acids, and fats
Use - for energy, healing, and storage
Diabetes diagnosis criteria
A1C > 6.5%
Fasting glucose > 12
2 hour plasma glucose > 200
Patient with classic diabetes symptoms with random plasma glucose > 200
Main med for type 2 diabetes
Glucophage. Not given for iv contrast and held 48 hours prior
Oral Hypoglycemic agents
Sulfonylureas, Meglitinide, Neteglinide
Antihyperglycemic agents
Biguanise, A-glucosidase inhibitors, and thiazolidindione
Biguanide effect
Decrease hepatic glucose production
A-glucosidase inhibitor effect
Delay carb absorption in the intestine
Thiazolidindione effect
Sensitize muscle cells to insulin
Cannot use metformin with
IV contrast
Diabetes medication combinations
Metaglip and Glucocance (affect pancreas and liver)
Avadamet (affect muscle and liver)
Avandaryl (affect muscle and pancreas)
Injectable antihyperglycemic agents
Byetta and Symlin
Alpha endocrine cells
Secrete glucagon
Log insulin precautions
Only given when meal is present
