Scleroderma
Tight collagen, looks like they had many face lifts.
Macule
Flat mole. Freckles, petechiae, flat mole.
Papule
Elevated, solid lesion. Wart or elevated mole
Vesicle
Superficial collection of serous fluid. Chickenpox, burns
Plaque
Elevated superficial lesion. Psoriasis
Wheal
Firm, edematous, irregularly shaped area. Insect bite, urticaria
Pustule
Elevated lesion with pus. Acne
Fissure
Crack or break in skin. Athlete’s foot, cracks in the corner of mouth
Scale
Excess, dead skin cells. Flaking of skin after drug reaction or scarlet fever.
Primary Intention
Wound edges always remain intact. Approximated. Cover with dry, sterile dressing as there is no open wound.
Secondary Intention
Incision edges are lost and it is no longer approximated.
Tertiary Intention
Left open and closed at a later date.
Diagnostic Tests
Biopsy (gold standard): Checks malignancy
Patch Testing: Allergies
Wood’s Lamp: Fungal infection
KOH: Fungal infection
Mineral Oil Slides: Infestations (bugs)
Culture/Sensitivity: Checks for Fungal/Bacterial/Viral infections for antibiotics.
Dermatitis types
Contact: Caused by contact
Stasis: Caused by stasis (no blood flow)
Atopic: Eczema. Unkown etiology.
Dermatitis Interventions
Remove irritant, keep lubricated, cool compresses, antihistamines, and topical steroids (but not long term).
