Acids and Bases *Unit 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What type of medium are acids and bases
A
electrolytes
2
Q
Acids
A
- proton donors
- they release hydrogen ions
- less than ph of 7 is acidic
3
Q
Bases
A
- Proton acceptors
- they pick up H+ ions
- more than 7 is basic
4
Q
Normal Blood Ph
A
7.4
5
Q
Alakalosis PH
A
If blood PH is more than 7.45
6
Q
Acidic PH
A
If blood PH is less than 7.4
7
Q
What can be the causes for a problematic PH?
A
Metabolic or Respiratory
8
Q
Metabolic Indicator
A
Bicarbonate - buffer in blood
Metabolic Acidosis HCO3- is less than 24
Metabolic Alkalosis HCO3 is when the level was more than 24
9
Q
Respiratory Indicator
A
Partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) is the measure of carbon dioxide within arterial or venous blood. CO2 is acidic.
Respiratory Acidosis PCO2 occurs when the level is more than 40mmHg
Respiratory Alkalosis PC02 occurs when the level is less than 40 mmHg
