abx part 2 Flashcards
Sinusitis criteria
> 10 days of upper respiratory signs and symptoms that do not resolve may lead to bacterial sinusitis
Acute sinusitis
fever >39 degrees, facial pain, or purulent nasal discharge lasting for 3-4 consecutive days
Chronic sinusitis
signs and symptoms that last 8 to 12 weeks and confirmed by radiography. 3 to 4 episodes per year may be suggestive of chronic sinusitis
good drug for Sinusitis
Amoxicillin +/- clavulanate
Sinusitis: Give higher doses for patients at higher risk of resistance:
S. pneumoniae resistance > 10%
Recent antimicrobial use (within 30 days)
Recent hospitalization
Daycare setting
Sinusitis: if they have a pen allergy give ___ or ___
Doxycycline or FQ
Sinusitis: for kids use
3rd gen cephalosporin
skin infection involving the dermis and subcutaneous tissues; non-defined borders
Cellulitis
superficial infection, usually caused by Streptococci, that involves the upper dermis and extends into the subcutaneous lymphatic vessels; defined borders
Erysipelas
Contagious superficial skin infection caused most commonly by S. aureus or S. pyogenes. If lesions are small and few, can use topicals
Impetigo
Topical treatment for MSSA
Retapamulin
Topical treatment for MRSA
Mupirocin
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Oral treatment for staph/strep
Cephalexin
Dicloxacillin
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Oral treatment for MRSA
Clindamycin
TMP/SMX
Doxycycline
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Oral treatment for someone with pen allergy
Macrolide (no suspicion of MRSA)
Clindamycin (no suspicion of MRSA)
drug of choice for Animal Bite Wound Infections
Amoxicillin/clavulanate
Animal Bite Wound: __ days of post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if they have a high risk of complications without obvious signs of active infection
3-5
Animal Bite Wound: __ days if there is active infection, but not severe
5-10
Animal Bite Wound: __ days for severe infection requiring IV antibiotics

Animal Bite Wound: Avoid m____ due to high levels of resistance
macrolides
Animal Bite Wound: Avoid macrolides due to
high levels of resistance
Animal Bite Wound: Avoid f______ if possible due to collateral damage and adverse effects
fluoroquinolones
Animal Bite Wound: Avoid fluoroquinolones if possible due to
collateral damage and adverse effects
Animal Bite Wound: if it involves MRSA give
doxycycline
For Community -Acquired Pneumonia, if they have no comorbidities give a___, d___, or m___
amoxicillin, doxycycline, or macrolide
For Community -Acquired Pneumonia, if they have comorbidities and you want to use combination therapy give a___ or c___ plus m___ or d____
