Q

what is power; how do you obtain joules from it?

A

power is work over time, thus power units of Watt [W] = [J/s]. Thus, multiplying watts by a unit of time (ie seconds) would yield the energy in joules.

Q

what differs whether a reaction is ruled by kinetic or thermodynamic preferences?

A

The kinetic product generally has to rearrange to become thermodynamically stable, whereas the thermodynamic product does not rearrange because it is already in the most stable form.

Q

delta G equations at equilibrium

A

delta G is 0 at equilibrium
delta G = delta Go + RT ln (Keq)

thus, delta Go = - RT ln (Keq)

Q

how does deprotonation affect nucleophilicity

eg. of a water

A

Deprotonation of the reacting water will make it more nucleophilic and reactive towards the electrophilic carbonyl atom
