A02 evaluation research into obedience Flashcards
What are the 4 ethical issues in obedience research
Deception and lack of informed consent
Right to withdraw
Protection from psych harm
Why was milgrams research subjected to so much criticism
Talk bout deception and lack of informed consent
Well the participants were chives cz they weren’t told it was false shocks which also means there was a lack of informed consent but you could argue tat was ok because 74% of Pps said they learned something of personal importance
Talk about right to withdraw
Weren’t given it as seen as the experiment or told them to cary on when they asked to stop
Psychological harm
Some argue it placed psychological strain on them and could have caused a heart attack whilst they were giving them shocks
However baumrind found that 84 felt glad they had participated and 74 percent felt they learnt something so you could argue the psychological harm if any was justified
Why did it recieve hostile criticism?
Because of its findings that suggested human can be dangerously obedient
What are the 2 sections on the validity in obedience research
Realism
Generalisability
Talk about realism
Who talked about it
Orne and Holland
Pps knew the study was fake. However, Milgram said that the Pps did believe it was real because of their reaction and their comments during the debrief
Talk about Generalisability
Who talked about it
Hofling et al
Also found high levels of obedience in nurses
But Rank and jacobsen
found opposite in a more realistic study
