Research was conducted in the 50s during strong feeling if anti communism in America when people were scared to be different

Repeated asch study in England in 70s
Initial study if engineerinf students only one person conformed out of 400
Second study using youths on probation as Pps and probation officers a confederates and found similar conformity levels to asch
Suggests conformity more likely when perceived costs if nonconformity are high

3 out if 4 wore the same set of glasses. So one saw they lines differently

So rather than showing human beings as conformists, the study showed that we tend to stick to what we believe or show independent behaviour.
