A - 5. Local anesthetics Flashcards
1
Q
Main mechanism of local anesthetics
A
Inhibits conduction of AP by inhibiting sodium channels
2
Q
Esters; names
A
Cocaine (inhibits reuptake of dopamine (euphoria) and cathecolamines (fight/flight))
3
Q
Amides; names
A
Lidocaine (most frequently used)
Bupivicaine (long duartion, used for epidural, cardiotoxic)
Articaine (lipid soluble, used in dentistry)
4
Q
SE: Bloodstream
A
- decreased inhibitory neuronal activity -> restlessness, anxiety
- decreased activity of ALL neurons -> CNS and respiratory failure
5
Q
SE: cardiovascular
A
- Rate of AP on myocytes decreased -> bradycardia and lowered CO
- vasodialation
6
Q
Administration
A
- Topical
- Injection into tissue
- Nerve block (epidural)
