9.2 The skull and cranial nerves Flashcards
How many bones are in the skull?
22 bones
What is the roof of the cranial cavity called?
Cranial vault
What is the floor of the cranial cavity called?
Cranial base
Name the bones of the cranium
2 Frontal, 2 Parietal, 1 Occipital, 2 Temporal, 1 Sphenoid, 1 Ethomoid
What are the 3 sutures of the skull?
Coronal, Sagittal and Lambdoidal
What is on the floor of the cranium?
3 levels- Anterior, Middle and Posterior cranial fossa
Name the boundaries of the Anterior cranial fossa
Frontal bone, Lesser wing of sphenoid, Orbital plates of the frontal bone
Name the boundaries of the Middle cranial fossa
Lesser wing of Sphenoid, Petrous portion of temporal bone, Temporal bone laterally
Describe the Sphenoid bone
Forms the anterior and middle cranial fossa, connects the orbits with cranial cavity
Name the boundaries of the Posterior cranial fossa
Anterior there is the Petrous portion of the temporal bone, floor is made up of the mastoid process of the temporal bone
How many cranial nerves are there?
12 pairs
What is CN I
Olfactory
What is CN II
Optic
What is CN III
Oculomotor
What is CN IV
Trochlear
What is CN V
Trigeminal
What is CN VI
Abducent
What is CN VII
Facial
What is CN VIII
Vestibulocochlear
What is CN IX
Glossopharyngeal
What is CN X
Vagus
What is CN XI
Accessory
What is CN XII
Hypoglossal
What cranial nerves are sensory?
1, 2, 8
What cranial nerves are motor?
3, 4, 6, 11, 12
What cranial nerves have mixed functions?
5, 7, 9, 10
Describe the Olfactory Nerve
CN 1, sense of smell, exits the skull through the cribiform plate
Describe the Optic nerve
CN 2, vision, exits the skull through the optic canal
What nerves control the muscles of the eye and how many muscles are there?
CN 3, 4 and 6- 6 muscles, these nerves exit the skull through the superior orbital fissure
Describe the Trigeminal nerve
Somatic sensory to the face and motor for muscles of mastication. There are 3 branches for sensory each leaving the skull in a different place- V1- Superior orbital fissure, V2- Foramen rotundum, V3- Foramen ovale
Describe the Facial nerve
CN 7, arises from the brain stem, 5 terminal branches (Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Cervical and Marginal mandibular), Motor- muscles of facial expression, Visceral sensory to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Describe the Vestibulocochlear nerve
CN 8, hearing and balance, exits the skull at the internal acoustic meatus
Describe the Glossopharnygeal nerve
CN 9, sensory from tongue post 1/3 ( temp., fine touch and pain, taste), exits skull at Jugular foramen
Describe the Vagus nerve
CN 10, the autonomic nerve, visceral motor to mostly autonomic, somatic sensory to pharynx and larynx and so much more
Describe Spinal accessory nerve
CN 11, provides motor input to sternomastoid and upper part of trapezius, exits skull through jugular foramen, main job is to shrug shoulder and turn head
Describe the Hypoglossal nerve
CN 12, motor innervation to muscles of the tongue except palatoglossus (CN 10), exits the skull through hypoglosal foramen, controls movement of tongue
