9. DNA Replication Flashcards
define what DNA replication is
process of making two idenetical replicas of DNA from one original DNA molecule
how does DNA replication occur?
hint: parental and daughter
the DNA double helix splits into two parental strands, nucelotides join the single strands to form the sugar - phosphate back bone of the daughter strands
DNA replication can only be added onto the 3’ end of the growing chain, meaning the strands are being sythesised in the opposite direction due to the anti-parallel nature. what is the enzyme that can attach to the strands, also what are the strands called?
the RNA primer attaches to the 3’ end of the DNA. there is a leading strand and the lagging strand.
name the three type of replication models, and which one is used in DNA replication
hint: con sem di
conservitive model, semiconservitive model and dispersive model. the semiconcertive model is used in DNA replication
what is the enzyme that is a catalist to create DNA synthesis. how do they do this?
hint: something to do with adding ___ to a chain
DNA polymerases. they add nucleotides to a pre-existing chain
what is the origin of replication site (ori site) on a DNA sequence?
the site where replication is initiated and the DNA is unwound
what does the RNA primer do?
is a starting point for DNA synthesis
what is the enzyme DNA helicase do?
hint: being organsied
it unwinds and seperates the parent DNA strand. allows each strand to be copied
