5.0 Carbohydrates Flashcards
what is a monosaccharide? name two types of sugars it includes. (think ones that end with ose)
the simlest form of sugar that cant be hydrolised further. inlcudes glucose and fructose
what is a disaccharide? name two types of sugars it is
two monosaccharides joined by a glycosidic linkage (covalent bond by dehydration reaction). such as maltose (malt sugar in beer) and sucralose
what is a polysaccaride?
polymers with hundred or thousands of monosaccardies joined by glycosidc linkages (covalent bonds through dehydration reaction).
what is the use of a polysaccaride? name two (think what sugar does for people)
storage for cell energy
building material that protect the cell/organism
what is a storage polysachharide? also what are the types of energy stored in plants and animals
its energy stored for later use in plants and animals. Plants store startch (chloroplasts)
animals store glycogen
what is celluose? hint something to do with glucose and plants
a polysaccaride that encloses plant walls in palnts. a polymer of glucose
