8. Cell Organisation and Communication Flashcards
what is the cytoskeleton? name the functions and how it helps the cell
its a network of fibres that gives support and maintains the cell shape
what are the three componenets of the cytoskelelton?
Microtubules
microfillaments
intermediate fillaments
what are the three funcitons of microtubules within the cytoskeleton? what are they made of? (macromolecule and type of macromolecule)
cell division (mitosis)
maintain cell shape
organising activities in the cell
microtubules are made of proteins called tubulin, they are hollow.
what are microtubules made out of?
hint: its a protein
globular proteins
define what microfillaments function is (three points)
hint: think about walking
they maintain the cell shape, muscle contraction and intracelluar movement.
what are intermediate fillaments? two points
helps with cell shape
regulates celluar events (transcription & translation)
what type of protein are intermediate fillaments made from?
hint: its not actin
keratin!! think of my hair
what are the two names of cell signaling? hint: its not a trick question
local signalling and long distance signalling
describe what local signalling is
molecules being secreted out of cells by exocytis and DIFFUSED to another cell that is near by
describe what long distance signalling is
travel via the circulatory system to another cell
