5.1 Lipids and celluar membranes Flashcards
what is a lipid? are they hydrophilic or hydrophobic? how well do they mix?
fatty acid organic compounds. they all have hydrophobic behaviour and mix poorly
what are the three types of lipids?
fats (tryglicerides), phospholipids and steroids
what is so important about phospholipid properties? eg how they ar ewith water and charges, what they create
there are two hydrocarbon tales that are hydrophobic and one negative electric charged glycerol head that is hydrophilic. creates bilayers in cell membranes
how many rings does a steroid have? is the skeleton made out of hydrogen, nitrogen, hydoxyl or carbon?
steroids have four carbon fused rings. variety occurs with the chemical groups attached
what is a celluar membrane?
a membrane that seperates the inside and outside of cell
what are the three molecules celluar membranes are made from?
hint think of food
lipids, proteins and carbohydrates
what are celluar membranes held together by?
hint: its a strong bond
by hydrophobic interactions witha phosholipid bilayer
