6. A Tour Of Cells Flashcards
there are prokaryotic cells and eukarotic cells. what do the cells both have in common? name 5 points
- al have a plasma membrane
- contain cytosol (jelly like substance)
- contain chromosomes
- contain DNA
- have ribosomes
there are prokaryotic and eukarotic cells. what is different between them? name four points
- only eukaryotic cells have a nucleus
- prokaryotic cells are unicelluar
- only eukaryote cells are membrane bound
- eukaryotes contain organelles (think the endoplamic reticulum, golgi aparatus, microtubules)
define what a nucloid is and is it in an eukaryote or prokaryote cell?
nucleoid is not an enclosed membrane, therefore it is in a prokaryote cell
what is an organelle and are they in prokaryotes or eukaryotes?
organelles are internal membrane systems that divide the cell into compartments (think of a house with many rooms with different funcitons). Its in a eukaryote cell
what is mitochondria?
the site of celluar respiration (oxygen). power generates - use ATP
what are chloroplasts? what type of ogansisms are they found in?
they take energy from light and convert it to sugars by photosynthesis. found in eukaroytic plants
what are the similarites in mitochondria and chlorplasts in eukaryotes? name two
hint something to do with DNA
- they both have DNA found in the nucleus
- both of their organelles use their DNA to make proteins and enzymes for function
what are the differences between mitochondria and chloroplasts in eukaryotic cells? name two
hint: its the way they source their energy
- mitochondria reate ATP from GLUCOSE from CELLUAR RESPIRATION
- chrloplasts produce ATP from LIGHT!!!! (PHOTOSYNTHESIS)
what do peroxisomes do?
hint: something to do with oxygen
they detoxify oxygen!!
