1b Chemistry Flashcards
Define what an element is
A substance that cannot be broken down any further
What is a compound?
Two or more different elements combined
Name the three subatomic particles and what their charges are
Neutrons (neutral) , protons (positive) and electrons (negatives).
Define a covalent bond
A strong bond by SHARING a pair of valence electrons
What is an ionic bond?
The TRANSFER of valence electrons between atoms. Between two opposite charged ions.

What is a hydrogen bond?
A weak covalent bond between two atoms from a proton (positive charge) and an electro negative atom in another.
What is a polar covalent bond?
A covalent bond between atoms that differ in electronegativity. The shared electrons are pulled closer to the more electronegative atom, making it slightly negative and the other atom slightly positive.

What is a non polar covalent bond?
A type of covalent bond in which electrons are shared equally between two atoms of similar electronegativity.
