9/5b OSHA/HIPAA Orientation Flashcards
What does OSHA stand for
Occupational Safety and Health Administration - of bloodborne pathogens
Resources to learn more about bloodborne/regular pathogen review
OSHA site, CDC site, Infection control professionals, arcadia student health, CIs and Supervisors in clinics
What’s the difference in OSHA and CDC
OSHA is strictly covering bloodborne pathogens, while CDC encompasses some BBP and a lot of other info
Examples of bloodborne pathogens
HIV
HBV
HCV
Breakdown of importance of bloodborne pathogens
Prevalence
Incidence
Symptoms
Risk of contracting
HIV Breakdown
Prevalence - over 1 million people in the US have HIV
Incidence - decreasing yearly because of new treatments and precautions
Symptoms - flu like fever, sweats, swollen glands, sore throat, diarrhea, fatigue, may progress to AIDS
Risk - 0.3%
HBV Breakdown
P - 1.5 million
I - 2900 new cases in 2012, this amount is increasing too
S - 1/3 none, 1/3 flu like, 1/3 acute hep (jaundince, fatigue, nausea, dark urine, abdominal pain)
R - 6-30%
HCV Breakdown
P - MOST common in US 3.2 million
I - not large, but hard to ascertain due to immigrants entering and exiting the country
S - 80% no symptoms, some could be chronic fatigue
R - 1.8%
Sources for transmission of BBP
blood and body fluids containing blood
How do we treat any patient who has open body fluids
treat like they are infected and take precautions like there is blood in the fluid as well
Modes of BBP
- At the workplace (puncture wounds, open wound, broken skin, mucous membranes (EYES, NOSE, MOUTH)
- Outside of Workplace (sexual contact, drug use, blood transfusion)
Ways to prevent contracting BBP
- Vaccination*
- PPE (gloves, masks, protective clothing, protective eyewear, face shields)
Different kinds of gloves
Sterile - wound care
Exam - most common in clinic
Work/utility - custodians
**Never reuse any of these and always wash hands before and after use
CDC Standard precautions
- Not just BBP, all bodily fluids except sweat
- Contact precautions - gown and gloves
- Antibiotic resistant bacteria - MRSA, VRE, C-Diff**
- Airborne precautions - Pulm TB, Chickenpox
Is sweat considered a body fluid that carries BBP?
NO
