8/28b Communication, Values and Behavior Flashcards
Values
deeply held and always evolving are the most important.
principles, one’s judgement of what is important, attributed from many sources, and dictate standards of behavior
Glaser’s 3 realms of values
individual
organizational
societal
break down what makes up individual values
spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional
what does organization do in value?
attends to health, vigor, balance, and equity of organization.
Ensures accomplishment of a mission, vision, and goals
T/F: all societies have the same overall goals and values
FALSE - it is bad to make that assumption
Values in conflict
individual within org and society yields a “good Samaritan” who conforms to society
VS individual and society separate yields an individual who just doesn’t fit in OR who is an immigrant
Can values be replaced?
Yes, but it is dependent on the maturity/adaptability of the patient.
how do you replace the values of an older woman who doesn’t want to use a cane even though she is VERY stable with it
talk to her about motivational factors that exist within her other values
Effective communicators _____
demonstrate listening (ask ask tell), have a lot of empathy, express non-verbal communication
Process
Semantic
Physical
Communication barriers
- process = sending, encoding, decoding (EX not listening)
- semantic = what and how things are said
- physical = distance, walls, interruptions, noise/reception, etc.
