9/3d ROM Flashcards
PROM
Passive Range of Motion - truly passive is hard to accomplish.
why - someone who is unable to do active ROM and you don’t want them to fatigue
how - manual therapy and stretching
AROM
Active Range of Motion - muscle contraction necessary
why - strengthen weak muscles
how - active and resistance motion is critical
AAROM
active assisted range of motion - Patient uses the muscles surrounding the joint to perform the exercise but requires some help from the therapist or equipment (such as a strap)
why - tendon repair, and you’re trying to give the sensory perception that fullmotion is there the the whole patient is not available
how - strap
flexibility
the length of a muscle/the ability for a muscle to elongate
what structures influence ROM?
ligaments meniscus - enhance surface area of joint, stability tendons - muscle to bone joint capsule - bone to bone, stability fat pads bursae synovial fluid ***articular/hyaline cartilage - critical for friction/free surface between joints
which is more important PROM or AROM?
- PROM allows for more force than AROM. PROM can surpass AROM
- If P is more than A, then patient is unable to relax the muscle and there is a tissue length issue
Lag
when there is a problem in the force production system
