8/28c Producing Voluntary Movement LAB Flashcards
Serial/Sequential Movement
Brushing Teeth, getting into your car, writing, yoga, etc.
This movement pattern allows for a person to do things step by step
Discrete Movement
Turning on a light, throwing a ball. This movement is something that is really just one and done. You do one specific action to complete a specific task
Continuous Movement
Walking, Running. This movement has a lot of fluidity, it requires a flow and repeats the same pattern
Motor Control
the study of the nature and cause of movement
Reflex Theory
Simple reflexes are combined into greater actions which constitute behavior (Charles Sherrington)
Hot stove, losing all sensation in limbs
Hierarchical Theory
Each successively higher level in the nervous system exerts control over the level below it (Hughlings Jackson)
Grabbing a glass vs balancing on index finger - which is more conscious and which theory is this related to?
Hierarchical theory
the balance action is more conscious
Motor Program Theory
Central Motor Pattern can generate movement (t. graham browne)
When you write a signature with opposite hands and on different surfaces will it be the same? What theory does this prove?
Yes, often the signature looks the same.
This is a product of the motor program theory, central motor pattern generates movement in different ways.
Systems Theory
Body is a mechanical system with mass and subject to external forces (gravity) and internal forces (inertia). COntrol of movement is distributed throughout the system. Degrees of Freedom need to be controlled (bernstein)
Dynamical Action/System Theory
When a system of individual parts comes together, its elements behave collectively in an ordered way. Movement emerges as a result of interacting elements, without the need for specific commands or motor programs
Ecological Theory
Motor control evolves to cope with the environment
Walking on sand vs ice
