7.8 Einstein's Equation Flashcards
What equation is used to calculate mass change to energy and vice versa?
(lambda)E = (lambda)m x c^2
Who discovered this equation?
Einstein
What is the speed of light?
3x10^8
Is mass and energy interchangeable?
Yes
What sometimes will occur in the exam that isn’t necessarily wrong, but looks wrong.
Getting speed of greater than the speed of light (> 3x10^8)
Why isn’t this wrong?
Due to the theory of special relativity proposed by einstein. He predicted that when matter approaches the speed of light, it will start to gain mass.
What changes when mass increases?
Kinetic energy and velocity.
What is the equation for the mass compared to v and c?
we don’t need to be able to use this equation, but have to be able to describe it
m = t / (square root) 1 - v^2/c^2
Can we actually reach the speed of light?
NO, velocity and kinetic energy decrease as we get closer
What happens to energy as we get closer to the speed of light?
Increases
What is the name of this theory?
Theory of special relativity
When energy is changed into matter what else do we have to get and how much of it?
Antimatter, equal to amount of matter
What is this called?
pair production
