12.2 Charles' Law Flashcards
What is the relationship between in Charles’ Law?
between volume and temperature
How is volume and temperature related?
Volume is directly proportional to temperature
What is the graph for volume against temperature if temperature is in kelvin?
Straight line through the origin
What is the graph for volume against temperature if temperature is in Celsius?
Straight Line crossing x- axis at -273
What is the charles’ law numerically?
V = kT V/T = k V1/T1 = V2/T2
What happens when you heat the gas while keeping mass and pressure the same?
Molecules gain kinetic energy. At constant pressure and mass they move more quickly and further apart so volume increases.
Is volume proportional to number of moles if pressure and temperature are constant?
Yes
What does number of moles essentially represent?
The mass
Equation for the relationship between volume and moles?
V1/n1 = V2/n2
What setup would we use to investigate Charles’ Law?
Have a beaker containing very hot water. along with a themometer, capillary tube with a drop of concentrated sulfuric acid. Also a ruler
How does this experiment work?
The acid acts as a barrier and traps air between bottom and acid drop. This is the volume. As the water cools the length should decrease. Reguularly record temperature and corresponding height of drop on the metre ruler. Repeat multiple times with fresh water and allow time for adjustment to temperature of capillary tube
