6.1 Magnetic Fields Introduction Flashcards
What is a magnetic field?
A region where magnetic materials will feel a force.
Can lines of the magnetic fields cross?
No
From what to what do the field lines go in a magnetic field?
North pole to south pole
From a diagram of a magnetic field of a bar magnet where would the magnetic flux density be strongest?
Where lines are closest together
From a diagram of a magnetic field of a bar magnet where would the magnetic flux density be weakest?
Where lines are furthest away from each other.
What is a neutral point in a magnetic field?
A point where lines of field overlap and cancel out. Magnetic field is not present at that point.
What is another term for magnetic field strength?
magnetic flux density
Can supplying electric current create magnetic fields?
Yes, as long as it is supplied to a conductor e.g.wire
What is special about the magnetic field produced by electric currents?
They always loop.
What would the magnetic field of a long straight wire look like when current is supplied.
A concentric circle.
How can we work out the direction of magnetic field or current around a conductor with an electric current?
Right hand rule
What does the thumb represent in the right hand rule?
Direction of conventional current.
What do the curled 4 fingers represent in the right hand rule?
The direction of the magnetic field in a concentric circle.
Does the magnetic field around the conductor get weaker as you get further from the conductor?
Yes, lines get further away from each other.
What is a solenoid?
A cylindrical coil of wire acting as a magnet when carrying electric current.
