7.4 Classification and evolution Flashcards
What is it called when we put organisms into different groups?
The Natural Classification System
What determines whether or not two organisms are in the same group?
The differences and the similarities between them
What are the 3 largest groups
Plant, animal and microorganism Kingdoms.
What is the smallest group in the classification system?
Species
What determines whether or not to organisms are members of the same species?
They must be similar
Must be able to breed together to produce FERTILE offspring
Give an example of two animals from difference species which can breed together. Why are they different species when they can produce offspring
horse and donkey (mule). Mules are infertile
What is an evolutionary tree?
Models that can be drawn to show the relationships between different groups of organisms and if they had common ancestors. Will show lines that have become extinct and have divided into sub groups.
