What drugs are used to enhance performance in sport and what do they do?
Steroids, they build up muscle mass. Other drugs can increase staminas
Why are strong pain killers banned in sport?
As athletes might ignore an injury and suffer further damage.
Why are steroids banned in sport?
They give an unfair advantage to those taking them.
Problems of using performance enhancing drugs in sport
Can damage the body permanently and even cause death.
Many are banned, if caught using them the athlete can be banned from the sport.
Very expensive
Unethical to have an unfair advantage.
Why to athletes sometimes take steroids even though they are banned?
Pressure to win
prestige if win
Financial gain if win
Sometimes taken by accident (eg in a cold remedy)
Why does the use of legal drugs in the uk produce more health problems than the use of illegal drugs.
Because they are much more widely available, eg addiction to tobacco, sleeping pills, painkillers.
