2.6 Hormones and the control of plant growth Flashcards
3 things plants are sensitive to
light, gravity and moisture
What is it called when a plant grows towards the light?
phototropism
What is it called when a roots grows towards gravity
gravitropism. Roots also grow towards water.
What is the hormone which controls phototropism and gravitropism?
Auxin
How does auxin control which way roots and stems grow?
Auxin will collect on the side of roots and stems nearest gravity. The root will grow most on the side with lots of auxin, so it will grow down. In stems, the plant will grow most of the side with less auxin, so the stem will grow up (away from gravity)
What do plant stems grow towards and away from?
Light, away from gravity
What do roots grow towards?
water and gravity.
If stems and roots are growing straight up/down how is the auxin distributed in the stems/roots
it is evenly distributed
