6.5 Adult cell cloning Flashcards
What is adult cell cloning?
When the nucleus of a cell from an adult replaces the nucleus of an egg cell. The animal which grows from this will be genetically identical to the adult donor. Usually a skin cell is used
What are the steps in adult cloning?
Nucleus removed from an unfertilized egg cell
Nucleus removed from an adult skin cell and put inside the unfertilized egg cell.
The new cell given an electric shock which makes it start to grow.
When it has grown into several cells, it is an embryo and is implanted into the host mother.

Who was Dolly the sheep
First animal produced by adult cloning, 1997
What are the benefits of adult cell cloning
Animals can be genetically engineered to produce proteins in their will which can be used in medicine
Can be used to save animals from extinction
Disadvantages of adult cell cloning
Concerns about ethics (tampering with life)
Is it ok to clone humans?
Limits variations in populations
Name the cells needed in adult cell cloning
An unfertilized egg cell and an adult cell, usually a skin cell
